For 93 years the Palais Royale has been home to great musicians such as Count Basie and Duke Ellington. In 2005 Palais Royale underwent a revival and now takes its place as one of Toronto’s premier event venues.
Built by the Toronto Harbour Commission and designed by Chapman, Oxley & Bishop, architects of the neighbouring Sunnyside Bathing Pavilion, it originally opened in 1922 as part of the Sunnyside Amusement Park. The building had the dual purpose of a boat house, “Dean’s Sunnyside Pleasure Boats Limited”, situated on the lower level for lake access, and a dance hall, located at the entry level, with two showrooms flanking either side of the entrance doors. By the 1930′s, the dance hall had made its mark on the nightlife of the city. With the rise of the “Big Band” era, the Palais Royale became one of Toronto’s most famous dance halls, with Bert Niosi’s resident house band, and attracting big names such as Tommy and Jimmy Dorsey, Benny Goodman, Glenn Miller, Count Basie and Duke Ellington.
Now restored to surpass its original splendour, it breathes new life and represents the pulse of the modern ballroom. Unique to the downtown lake shore, this spectacular revived facility emits natural beauty, alluring style and original architecture.

I can’t tell you many compliments I got regarding Palais. First of all, the service was so exceptional that I don’t think there was one person who didn’t comment on it. Next of course, was the food, how delicious it was and the presentation…it was ”die” for and it was presented so elegantly and tasted even better than it looked… Your staff were amazing… I didn’t get to thank them personally at the end of the night but you know how I feel and everyone loved the bartenders. They enjoyed the “shows” put on by them and really had a good time with them. The room was beautiful and there wasn’t anything anybody could find fault with. Again, thank all your staff for an amazing night and for making my daughter’s wedding the biggest moment in my life and the most beautiful. I could go on for pages and pages of accolades…It was a truly remarkable night and your staff can be very proud to be part of a fantastic team cuz no matter how small the job, it takes a team to produce what you guys do (not to mention their fabulous leader(s)- Elayn L.
